James R. Jones

James R. Jones has been practicing law for 22 years.  He competed two years of undergraduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1983.  He attended South Texas College of Law, graduated in 1986 and passed the Texas bar examination in November, 1986.  Upon graduation, he began practicing civil trial and appellate litigation.  He has extensive jury trial experience in both state and Federal court in such diverse areas as Jones Act, Longshoreman and Harbor Worker’s act, railroad crossings, auto collisions, medical malpractice, wrongful death insurance, products liability and family law among others.  From 1994 until 2007, he maintained a solo law practice before joining Garg and Associates, P.C. in early 2007. Representing clients on both the plaintiff and defense side of the docket, he has been successful in prevailing in a majority of his trials.

On the appellate side, the great majority of these cases are published opinions that have had a significant impact on many areas of Texas law, including worker’s compensation, insurance, procedure and personal injury.  He has appeared and argued before the First, Fourteenth and Dallas Court of Appeals.  Some of these cases changed Texas law, such as the elimination of the family member exclusion in automobile insurance policies. This ended the practice of insurance companies denying claims by relying on this provision.  In one case before the Texas Supreme Court, his brief was sufficient to persuade the Court to reverse a lower court ruling denying his client’s right to a hearing without oral argument.  He is presently managing partner with responsibility for the family law and litigation sections of Garg and Associates, P.C.
