What is a psychiatric disability?
For purposes of discussion and not a medical diagnosis, per a report by the Surgeon General, a mental disorder is a “diagnosable condition that impairs thinking, feeling and behavior, and interferes with a person's capacity to be productive and enjoy fulfilling relationships.” There is evidence that 40% of the leading causes of disability for persons 5 years and older are mental disorders. In the United States, major depression is the leading cause of disability.
